"The Recruiting Officer" by George Farquhar
In 1787, a fleet of convicts and prison guards sailed from London to England's new penal colony in Australia. A few months after arriving, some of the convicts acted in "The Recruiting Officer," a comedy by George Farquhar. This was Australia's first play.
In 1988, Timberlake Wertenbaker wrote a play about the convicts and their theatre. The play, "Our Country's Good" (which was based on the true story and on a novel, called "The Playmaker," by Thomas Keneally) won the Olivier Award and was nominated for a Tony.
